On Thursday, September 18, the Wisconsin Lions Foundation (WLF) hosted the opening session of NASA DISCOVERIES (Developing Interconnected STEM Communities of Vested Educational Relevance in Earth Science) for all 4th grade students from Rosholt Elementary School. This project provides STEM engagement opportunities for students in an outdoor learning environment.

NASA DISCOVERIES began in 2022 under the direction of Tina Harte Ballinger as a pilot at Camp Discovery in Blythewood, South Carolina. The project introduces students to GLOBE (Global Learning and Observation to Benefit the Environment) protocols, a NASA-sponsored environmental science program, and helps bridge classroom learning with real-world STEM applications. Students engage in inquiry-based experiential learning, team-building challenges, and connections with NASA subject matter experts and STEM professionals. WLF was chosen in 2024 to conduct a two year pilot of NASA DISCOVERIES. After successfully completing the first school year, WLF staff took what they learned to make improvements for year two. Currently, WLF is the only facility in the country leading NASA DISCOVERIES.

During the first session, students participated in introductory activities, including sharing what they hope to learn this year, focusing on their senses for observation and data collection, and practicing measurement techniques. Students throughout the school year will be using the IR thermometers to conduct surface temperature observations and data collection. Students will then learn how to analyze and interpret the data in order to present posters with their findings at the end of the school year.

WLF is donating the facility, instructor time, and supplies for the year. Plans are underway to seek local business support to provide lunches for participating students throughout the program. Those interested in contributing can contact Phillip Potter at ppotter@wlf.info.
